After all, Oregon hadn't seen a Senator lose since 1968 - and Gordon Smith was perceived as a likable moderate, the kind of Republican that even progressive Democrats could live with. He certainly wasn't going to be defeated by an unknown state legislator.
But as the first consultant hired by Jeff Merkley, we helped change the public conversation.
We built StopGordonSmith.com to tell Democrats why the incumbent needed to go. We gave Merkley a robust and attractive home at JeffMerkley.com. We organized bloggers at home and across the country. We developed a profitable email and online advertising fundraising program.
In the end, the effort included over 4.7 million emails, over 10 million online ad impressions, over 145,000 YouTube video-plays, and over 24,000 online donations from all 50 states.
And one brand-new U.S. Senator.
