Who we are: Mandate Media is a progressive political consulting firm specializing in digital strategy and services. We help Democratic political candidates and progressive advocacy groups integrate their strategy with technology. We design and build websites. We provide interactive campaign tools. We help our clients build big email lists, engage those audiences in activism, and raise lots of money. We help our clients with their social media strategies and deploy digital advertising. Our clients are changing the world – and we help them win.
What's the job? We are looking for a creative, thoughtful, detail-focused person to work as a political consultant and digital strategist to campaigns all across the country.
In this role, you will be expected to be fluent in communications and campaign tactics and how our work integrates with the rest of a campaign's or nonprofit's overall strategy. You will maintain an interest in and knowledge of the strategic landscape of our clients' efforts, identifying political risks and opportunities, and proactively offering online solutions to our clients’ challenges.
You will spend most of your time developing and managing creative and strategic efforts to engage our clients’ audiences – especially via email broadcasting. You will also be crafting meaningful petitions and digital activism actions, advising on social media strategy, and interpreting metrics for our clients.
Specific responsibilities:
- Write, edit, and produce broadcast emails
- Maintain client email calendar
- Prepare reports and present results of email & digital fundraising campaigns to the client
- Conceptualize advertising & acquisition campaigns, including copy-writing (design and production is handled by other team members)
- Track deliverables across multiple clients
This is a full-time job in a well-respected firm. Since 2001, we’ve worked for over 300 clients in 31 states, and you’ll help us grow. Each day will be different, and you'll be using your skills to help change the world and build a more just, equitable, and progressive America.
How you'll get there: We don't expect you to know everything on day one. This job includes an explicit training and transition program to get you up to speed.
Over your first 2-3 months, you'll learn the technical stuff (email production, performance reports, quality assurance) and get acquainted with our process and our clients. In the second 2-3 months, you'll start writing and editing emails and ad copy, as well as start to report on performance directly to our clients. After 4-6 months, you'll take the lead on a few clients, under the close guidance of our VP for Strategy, with increasing responsibility and independence over time.
Our expectation is that after 12 to 18 months on our team, you'll be promoted to Strategist and be ready to take on your own stable of clients. We are invested in your growth and want you to succeed.
What you bring to the table: Excellent political and strategic instincts, creative and persuasive writing skills, and sharp analytical capability are key to success in this role. If you’re already familiar with NGP or other email broadcasting tools, that’s a plus. You should be comfortable using spreadsheet tools, though we’ll train you on specific techniques we use.
Before long, you’ll be managing your own portfolio of clients, so confidence and ability to communicate are critical. Tasks will come fast and furious, so adaptability and time-management skills are a must. We don’t expect you to know everything on day one, but you’ll need to be comfortable expanding your skills fast.
Who are we looking for? The right person will be enthusiastic about joining a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Our ideal candidate is an organizational mastermind able to handle a vast array of details, has a knack for managing tough personalities and competing demands, and is comfortable working in a team environment. (And these days, working productively in a remote environment.) You’re a politics junkie, or at least have a passion for changing the world. As always, we’re looking for someone who is smart, fast, flexible, creative, and happy.
This job is located in Portland, Oregon. We are currently operating under a hybrid remote/office model, with three days a week in the office.
Since 2002, over 51% of the candidates to whom we’ve provided strategic guidance have been women, people of color, or LGBT. We believe that diversity is a strength, and we encourage individuals of all backgrounds to apply. Strong consideration will be given to applicants who can demonstrate lived experience in diverse communities. See mandatemedia.com/diversity for additional details.
We are 100% vaccinated, and we require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Compensation: $40,000/year to start. $42,000/year after six months. Expected promotion at 12-18 months. 100% employer-paid health insurance benefits, including dental, vision, and alternative care. Retirement savings matching program. Generous paid-time-off. Total compensation value of approximately $49,000.
How to apply: Please send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample. We persuade audiences to take action and support candidates, so use your cover letter to demonstrate your ability to make a case for yourself. Writing samples should include (if possible) email broadcasts, blog posts and/or press releases. All materials should be sent to Carrie Wynkoop at [email protected].
Process: This position is open until filled, and we are moving quickly. We will review applications as they arrive. Once we receive your materials, we'll contact you about the next steps in the process, including interviews and exercises. If you have any questions, email [email protected]. No calls, please.
